I have been working here in the US for quite some time now (around 5 years) and I bought a brand new van (for my family of 5) through an auto loan a year ago thinking that all will be fine with my stay here. Unfortunately, I now have to leave the country immediately due to issues with my visa. I have never been late for a payment and have an extremely good credit score indicating that I have been relatively responsible with my my finances. I wouldn't consider myself one who splurges and I have generally been living from paycheck to paycheck. Under the impression that all will be fine with us here in the US, we thought of investing on a brand new van since we see it as a necessity and that we would take care for it til it dies on us. Unfortunately, this issue was something we didn't see coming and now that I don't have work, I will definitely not be able to make my monthly payments. On Kelley Blue Book, the car's value is significantly less (by about $3k to $4k less) than what I still owe on the car. I am going to try and sell the van but I am doubting that I'd be able to find a buyer before my departure. What should I do? P.S. I am not a bad person and had every intention in becoming a respectable citizen of the US. This event has been a shock to my family. I have 3 very little children and my wife whom I have to uproot and reacquaint with a new environment because of this. I understand that I should probably have not gotten into the loan with the possibility that I may have to leave but unfortunately, it seemed like a good idea then because everything had been fine with us previously.

Recently was in a no fault accident but the case hasn't been closed. Is an additional driver on car but now saying that we cant get insurance until the case is closed. My car (an 05 Peugeot 206) was involved in an accident (which was my fault but thankfully no other vehicle or persons involved) and there's been some damage to the front of my car (bonnet, grill etc.) - I've rung my insurer and they believe it's a write-off but I've asked them to send an assessor to check the damage. I've also had an independent garage look at the car (as someone else said that they did this in a similar scenario) who believe its not a write-off and they can repair it (450 was quoted for parts!!). He's sending me a quote for insurance work and a quote if it was done for cash. Can I get my insurer to use this garage if their assessor still deems it a write-off? If not, what are my options? my friend was pulled over for speeding while unlicensed due to a 6 month lapse in insurance, she was arrested and charged with a misdimeanor of aggrivated unlicensed operation of a vehicle as well as speeding 20 miles over the speed limit. She has gotten other tickets in the past as well but those have long since been taken care of. She is 25. she believes that her car insurance is only going to be $80 a month in a few months when she is able to get her license back, and told me that the speeding ticket it will raise it a little, but the driving without a license and not paying car insurance for 6 months does not affect her rate. I'm currently with Progressive and have been very pleased with their service: I was in an accident in August and the entire process was very smooth and took little effort on my part. I worked with one local agent, dropped my car off at the Progressive repair center where they had my rental waiting for me, and returned the rental there when I came to pick my car up. Plus I never have to wait long to talk to someone when I call. However, I'm newly married and have found we would save a considerable amount by moving my two cars to my husbands policy with State Farm as opposed to moving his car to my policy with Progressive. Please let me know what type of experiences you've had with State Farm and if you would consider their service as excellent as I have with Progressive. Even if State Farm is cheaper, it won't be worth the savings if their service is crummy. Thanks!

Ok, I am trying to get some new auto insurance quotes from other companies. My problem is I have a few moving violations. One speeding ticket and one ticket for running a stop sign. They ask me if my violations have happened in the last 35 months. They said I can be 30 days off of the violation date, if I can't remember the exact date. I can't remember the date or even close. I know I can call the DMV and get a copy of my driving record for around $10. I am just wondering if there is an easier way of getting this information. Possibly through the internet. Thanks

We bought a 2011 Lancer on Dec 8th 2010. On Dec 27th 2010, we slid off the road in a blizzard, but the car was not damaged AT ALL. The car was parked and only had our pets and christmas gifts from the holidays. An idiot speeding in a snow storm made a b-line into our car. Both ours and their insurance determined the car totaled and the other driver was found at fault by his insurance company. We did have GAP coverage (which will NEVER happen again). I think we pay so much every month and therefore are entitled to be in the same position financially as we were before the accident. (Also, we had stuff : a rifle, our pets, their crate that got damaged. Let's say for the sake of argument that my car is valued at 2000.00 at the beginning of this year and my full coverage insurance on this vehicle is 500.00 a year. Now at the end of this year my car has depreciated to 1500.00. Shouldn't my full coverage insurance rate be adjusted to reflect the book value of the car and lowered appropriately and be dropped to say 400.00 a year? I'm 17 and live in New York. Been driving with a clean record for one year and I currently pay $100/month on my mom's '10 camry. I want to get my own car and I have narrowed everything down to a mustang, but I can't decide between a base model or a gt. I have discounts on my current policy such as good student and drivers ed. I will also take a defensive driving course for an added discount and the new car will also bring about a multi-car policy discount which will be helpful. My mom will be contributing the same $100 towards the car as she is now and the rest I have to pay for by myself. I have heard that the base and gt will cost about the same to insure, but that doesn't seem right considering that the gt has 100+hp more than the base, but people have supported that by saying the base models are involved in more crashes among young drivers. So can anybody set the record straight for me? Please don't give me responses saying that only my insurance agent can tell me that or too high for you to afford. Also would it be a wise decision to drop collision coverage for a huge insurance discount? I don't plan on racing this car.
Have a farely new Auto Loan but have to leave the country... What to do?
I have been working here in the US for quite some time now (around 5 years) and I bought a brand new van (for my family of 5) through an auto loan a year ago thinking that all will be fine with my stay here. Unfortunately, I now have to leave the country immediately due to issues with my visa. I have never been late for a payment and have an extremely good credit score indicating that I have been relatively responsible with my my finances. I wouldn't consider myself one who splurges and I have generally been living from paycheck to paycheck. Under the impression that all will be fine with us here in the US, we thought of investing on a brand new van since we see it as a necessity and that we would take care for it til it dies on us. Unfortunately, this issue was something we didn't see coming and now that I don't have work, I will definitely not be able to make my monthly payments. On Kelley Blue Book, the car's value is significantly less (by about $3k to $4k less) than what I still owe on the car. I am going to try and sell the van but I am doubting that I'd be able to find a buyer before my departure. What should I do? P.S. I am not a bad person and had every intention in becoming a respectable citizen of the US. This event has been a shock to my family. I have 3 very little children and my wife whom I have to uproot and reacquaint with a new environment because of this. I understand that I should probably have not gotten into the loan with the possibility that I may have to leave but unfortunately, it seemed like a good idea then because everything had been fine with us previously.

I was in a wreck that the insurance company of the other driver agreed to pay for. They made an estimate and said they will put a check in the mail. They said that if it costs more than the estimate, then they will take care of that also as long as I show the estimate to the repairman. That seems straightforward... and on the other hand: With other car issues, auto shops have seemed to be willing to underbid each other. I wouldn't mind getting it fixed for less than the check that I'm going to receive. Should I try to get estimates that are independent of the insurance company's estimate to see if I can save money? If I then go with a shop that says they can do it for cheaper, can I trust that they won't say it will be more later?
